The Mungyodance series has been praised for its diverse and very nonstandard dancing game music selection, including a large variety of hardcore, gabber, drum and bass, and other underground electronic genres. It is in this zone where the arrows must be hit. Normally, the arrows move in an upward fashion to the top of the screen, where they overlap with "Target Zone" arrows. The arrows are synchronized to the general rhythm or beat of a chosen song, and success is dependent on the player's ability to time and position their steps accordingly. A traditional computer keyboard is also acceptable. These panels are pressed using the player's feet, in response to arrows that appear on the screen in front of the player. The game is played on a dance pad with four arrow panels in a cross formation: left, right, up, and down. The game's engine is heavily based on StepMania, another free dance game simulation.
